New permit requirement for social media influencers

The UAE National Media Council introduced a new rule requiring to obtain an Advertiser Permit for individuals who engage in advertising activities on social media platforms, whether for financial compensation or not. In addition, content creators visiting the country will be required to apply for a Visitor Advertiser Permit.

Permit requirements:
- The applicant must be at least 18 years old
- Must have not violated any media content in the past
- UAE citizens and residents must obtain a trade license to practice electronic media from the relevant authority
- A visitor permit may be issued for individuals registered under an advertising agency or talent management agency accredited by the Council

The permit duration will be:
- 1 year (renewable) for citizens and residents
- 3 months (renewable) for visitors.

The permit will be issued free of charge for three years (until 2028) for UAE citizens and residents.

There are exemptions to the rule. The obligation to receive a permit doesn’t apply to:
- Any individual who promotes a product or service of their own or a company they own through their personal account,
- individuals under the age of 18 who engage in educational, athletic, cultural, or awareness activities, provided that the activity aligns with the age classification.

The application for the permit shall be submitted through the National Media Council platform.
